Today’s Edition is a 2005 Lexus GX470. It has 2 owners, no accidents, and meticulous service history. No rust and the frame was replaced 4 years ago. However, it has 291k miles. So that begs the question, at $5350 out the door (tax, title, fees all included), is it a NP or CP?

Last year I almost pulled the trigger on a 08 with 330k miles for about $7500 , but finally decided not to. I still kinda regret it, I think.
If the maintenance history is there and then normal wear stuff looks good, I’d consider it. Last belt service? Rear airbags replaced? Does it idle rough (mounts)? Clunk when you go over bumps (bushings)? Tires and brakes okay? Touch screen work without glitches (because HVAC)? Those are most of the expensive bits.

It’s crack pipe to me. With that much mileage, the most I’d pay would be maybe $2000 and hope to get a year or two out of it without too many repairs.
But I’m sure someone out there would out-bid me.

Look at comps? This one they want $14k!

I’m looking into belt service, rear air bags were replaced last year. Idles as smooth as can be. Bushings looked to be pretty good, although a little worn. Tires are good for another year, brakes were done 25k miles ago. Touch screen works great. Only thing broken is the rear a/c, which can’t be turned off because the button is stuck.

Any particular reason why? Too many miles?

That’s less than the frame alone cost

hard to say. With all that’ s gone into it I would say nay personally. Once you have a lot of work done to it, its not the same machine that left the factory and a little of that Toyota reliability goes with it in each passing hand.
That being said, if you were going to build this up to be an overland or trail rig. Yes.

That’s LX vs GX but the GX is just a LX Jr

Lexus has a website you can put the VIN in to and get maintenance history as long as they were performed at Lexus dealerships I believe...might go a long way in deciding if it’s worth it or not.

All major services have been done at a Toyota dealer with OEM parts, if that’s any consolation. Although if it needs a timing belt I’ll pass for sure

That’s crack pipe mostly because of those wheels and weird aftermarket projector headlights . That being said, it’s probably still worth ~$9k or so.

parts yes, service no. Toyota techs are hit and miss like the rest of them.

Whats up with the maintenance required light? Also a TPS light which is annoying but not complicated. Check into timing belt, that alone is $1000. Other than that it looks used but clean. If nothing on those issues I would say fair price. But hopefully not too much is wrong. These are repairable but just time consuming because of the extra stuff you have to take off
To give you an idea maybe, I paid 11.3k for my 05 with 103k almost a year ago. (It did not have the TRD wheels)

Yea, mileage is just a number to me until you get upwards of 250k. I’ve been hot on a couple of high mileage S4 Avants then wen I went to look I thought fuck, everything looks like its got 250k on it. I could gamble at $2500, but 5000 is too much to lose if it ends up being a disaster (for me anyway)

I would go for it, personally. Why was the frame replaced? Recall?
![]() 06/28/2019 at 15:46 |

Maintenance required is because the tech forgot to reset it after changing the oil. Oil is clean and full. I’m not getting a clear answer in timing belt so I’m probably gonna pass on it.

I definitely understand that it. If it was 250k or less, I’d probably be driving home in it right now. But it’s hard to justify almost 300k when I drive 18k miles a year
![]() 06/28/2019 at 15:48 |

Recall. Rest of the truck is 99.9% rust free

Just offer them $4,500. The timing belt and water pump are good for 90k miles.

I did, $5350 is what they came back with. He’s seeing if he can get $5000 out the door, but it’s listed at $7k and went on the lot last week

Yeah. To me, anything over 200k miles is a gift in just about any car, unless the owner is heavily involved w maintenance. I hold anything Toyota/Lexus to a slightly higher standard. Still, I think you’d be very lucky to drive that for a year with no issues, that’s not worth 5k to me.
![]() 06/28/2019 at 16:18 |

So you agree with me
that at
$2000, it
would be a NP.
![]() 06/28/2019 at 16:29 |

Damn almost 2k off it after a week? Wonder what they got it for. But still, as long as everything checks out.
![]() 06/28/2019 at 16:35 |

Depending on what you want it for, $5k wouldn’t be bad. Find an indy to do the timing belt, water pump, and check it over, and you’ll have a nice capable SUV for $6k.

I’ll give you that
![]() 06/28/2019 at 18:02 |

I’d guess they paid $4000 for trade in, if that. Then add a detail and list way too high to add enough padding to make a healthy profit

My neighbor has one of these. It looks like a great truck, but the Toyota V8 has a known issue with the emissions system that is a $1500 fix that requires replacing the catalytic converter.
![]() 06/28/2019 at 20:31 |

There’s a 100–series with 320k near me for $8k that I have my eye on. Terrible idea?
![]() 06/28/2019 at 21:24 |

Thankfully where I live we don’t have emissions, but still good to know
![]() 06/28/2019 at 22:45 |

I’m in Utah, which has emissions regulations, so my neighbor had figure out a way to register his truck in Idaho, which does not have regulations.
